Dontae loves writing about men's mental health and raising awareness about depression, why it is serious, and why it should be taught and talked about more. She is excited to see so many young people grow and strive to become bigger and better for the world. Currently, she is in school, learning while also speaking up for youth.

Dure Mir

My name is Dure Mir. I was born in Pakistan and raised in Canada. I am Glencairn’s Youth Champion for the “Youth Mental Health Friendly Neighbourhood” project. I was born in Lahore, Pakistan in November 2010, and moved to Canada when I was 18 months old.

When we first came here, my mom started a daycare. Growing up surrounded by kids from the neighbourhood, I quickly learned how important community is to me. I was exposed to diversity at a young age — different traditions, cultures, and ways of life. That shaped who I am today.

During this important time in my childhood, I also discovered art. I almost always had a crayon or pencil in my hand. Painting, sculpting, and sketching became more than just hobbies — they became my passion. Art is a powerful way to express emotions. It gives a voice to youth who may struggle to speak up, just like it did for me.

Through this youth project, I hope to give back to my community and connect with other youth through art. I want to help create a space where young people feel seen, heard, and supported.
