Understanding How Municipalities Work in Partnership with Local Public Health Systems to Enhance Population Health Outcomes and Reduce Health Inequalities

Funded by: Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF Establishment Grant)

About the Project:

This project investigates how municipalities and local public health systems can work in partnership to improve population health outcomes and reduce health inequities.
Municipal governments influence many of the social determinants of health, including housing, transportation, and access to food and services. However, the ways in which municipalities and public health systems collaborate—and which approaches are most effective—remain unclear. To address this gap, the study combines three key approaches:

  • A scoping review of international evidence on partnership models

  • Interviews with policy and decision-makers across municipalities and public health systems in Canada

  •  A policy roundtable in Saskatchewan to translate findings into actionable strategies

The research examines how different partnership models are governed, what factors enable or hinder collaboration, and how these partnerships influence health outcomes and equity.
